Living in Santos

Once a working docklands district, Santos is now where a lot of the city's designers, founders and studios have ended up. Rua da Esperança and the streets around it mix furniture ateliers and galleries with brunch spots and small bars, and there is a steady creative crowd that makes it easy to meet people.

The waterfront is the real draw. The Ribeira das Naus promenade runs east towards Praça do Comércio, the 25 de Abril bridge sits above you to the west, and the evening light on the Tejo is the reason people put up with the hills.

It is also unusually well connected for somewhere that feels this residential: Cais do Sodré station is walkable and gives you the green line, the Cascais train and the ferry across the river in one place.
