Arroios, Lisbon

Coliving in Arroios

Arroios has been called the most diverse parish in Lisbon, and it feels like it: Nepalese grocers next to Portuguese tascas, a covered market that does everything from vegetables to natural wine, and rents that still make sense.

A Lisbon street

The neighbourhood

Living in Arroios

The neighbourhood runs up Avenida Almirante Reis, the long avenue that connects the river end of the city to Alameda. That puts it within walking distance of IST at one end and ten minutes from Martim Moniz and the old town at the other, which is a rare combination.

It has become the part of Lisbon where new arrivals actually settle rather than visit. The Mercado de Arroios is a genuine neighbourhood market, there is a serious concentration of South Asian and Brazilian food, and the streets around Anjos fill up in the evenings with a crowd that lives here rather than one that is passing through.

For students it is the sensible alternative to Alameda, the same walk to campus, a bit more character, and usually a bit more space for the money.
